How To Wear The Biggest Hair Trend

The Bob is a significant hair trend that still remains popular.  I wanted to put this post together in the hope that it is helpful for clients and hairdressers to use together if you are contemplating having your hair cut into a bob or already wearing a bob to provide ideas on the many ways it is possible to style a bob.

The Bob is not a rigid shape it is adaptable to your face shape and your natural hair texture.  The most important rule when it comes to hair trends is how you feel and what you feel suits you best, after all, it's not like a piece of clothing which you can change and put something else on, you will be wearing it for some time.

Determining the length of your bob will depend on your face shape and sometimes the length of your neck.  The rule of the oval face shape being perceived as the perfect face shape, in my personal opinion, is dated. There are many ways to bespoke a hair trend that best suits you.

Hairstylists have the knowledge to bespoke a trend just for you.

The first thing to ask when you go to your stylist, is to ask your stylist to check your hairline around the back of your neck, you will need to be aware if there may be any problem areas, for example,  if your hairline grows slightly uneven, this cause’s the hair around your neck area to stick up. There may be ways to work around this, but you should be aware so that you do not encounter unknown styling challenges when it comes to styling your hair at home.

Which length is suitable for your face shape?

Please note that below information is guidelines, not rules, the only rule for suitability comes down to you feeling confident and comfortable in your look. If you are unsure of your face shape, ask your stylist, and if your not sure what look or length that will suit you best, I'm sure you stylist would be happy to advise you.

  • Round face shape - Consider wearing your bob longer than your jawline

  • Long face shape - The lip area to chin length, also consider a bevel to your Bob to add roundness to the form

  • Oval face shape - Take the length of your neck into consideration to decide your length

  • Heart face shape - Around the Jawline, also consider a fringe to expose your cheekbones

  • Diamond face shape - a diamond face shape will generally have a very small forehead which will need to take into consideration if you are thinking of having a fringe. A longer fringe that can be worn to the side may be more suitable.  for the length try the jawline to Lip area,

  • Square face shape - A bevelled Bob to create a round shape, will create softness.

Layering or a Bevel?

The current trend of wearing a bob is to keep the shape defined through the perimeter of the shape, with minimal layering and finished with texture and movement. Classically a bob is blunt on the ends and one length, however, that does not suit everyone so now we have the knowledge, products and inspiration to bespoke the bob.

Once you have decided on your length, you then need to determine if you add layers, a bevel or/and a fringe if keeping the shape at one length is not for you.

Layering will give volume but will compromise the definition of the shape of a bob through the perimeter of the shape and possibly thin out the sides of your hair too much for a bob.

A bevel which is a cross between layering and graduating will maintain your Bob and give a slight lift through the top and the sides, while still keeping your bob defined and adding volume.  A Bevel is also fantastic for wavy-curly hair as the bevel will control the wave/curl to prevent your movement from becoming unruly. If you have fine hair, a bevel will make your hair appear fuller without taking any weight out of the ends if your hair.
